Perhaps the distance between the boardroom and the bedroom is not as great as we imagine? And perhaps... neither is the distance between cultures.
I became familiar with the tension between Asian expectations and Western ideas of independence, alongside the pragmatism of a cosmopolitan city that measures success in very tangible terms. You learn to code-switch, not only in language, but in behaviour.
Adaptability becomes a strength. We call it emotional intelligence, cultural fluency, leadership or even diplomacy. But I have always been curious about what happens when those same skills enter the private sphere?
Being able to read another person and understand what is left unsaid. Knowing when to learn and when to listen. Holding composure while someone else is watching. Perhaps these are not contradictions at all...
I don't think living between cultures requires us to choose a side. Perhaps the privilege, and occasional inconvenience, of a third-culture life is that we get to decide what we carry forward, what we question, and ultimately, what we make our own.
